Tuina Medical Massage

What is Tuina?
Tuina (pronounced 'twee-nah') deep tissue massage is a complete healing system, and probably the oldest system of bodywork dating back 2500 years and documented in The Yellow Emperor's Classics of Internal Medicine.  Tuina continues to grow in popularity today across the globe.  The translation of Tuina means 'Tui' to push and 'Na' to pull and uses a variety of specialist techniques such as kneading, chopping, hacking, perpendicular pressure and rolling fist.  Tuina is referred to as a complete massage because there are two aspects to it; it works the muscles helping them to relax, removing stagnation and allowing blood to flow more freely throughout the area, giving the muscle optimum chance of repairing itself.  Secondly, it works with restoring the balance of Qi, the universal life force energy which all living forms have. In China, Tuina is used for conditions that, in the West, would be treated by osteopaths, chiropractors and physiotherapists or with prescription medication.

How is Tuina done, what does it feel like and are there any side effects?
Following an assessment of the issues to be treated clients will sit on a chair or lie on a couch.  There is no need to remove clothing, only coats, shoes and jewellery.  We ask all clients to wear loose and comfortable clothing, no jeans for Tuina please.  The massage is usually done using gentle to firm pressure using palms, thumbs, fingers and elbows, added to this are various stretches.  It can be a more vigorous massage as every technique requires movement as pressure.  One of Tuina's advantages over simple massage is its ability to focus on specific problems, especially chronic pain associated with the muscles, joints and skeletal system.

After the first session you may feel a little sore but after the second or third treatment you will normally adjust to the deep pressure.  However, Tuina can be varied in terms of pressure for children, elderly or any frailer conditions.  Tuina can produce a range of side effects, but all of them will be positive.  An example would be a person who is being treated for tight neck and shoulders finding that there heartburn has also been eased.  Similar to other Chinese Medicine treatments, Tuina is designed to prevent problems, not just correct them.  By keeping the body's energy in balance, health is maintained.

How does Tuina Work?
Tuina works in accordance with the complex theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine.  The primary principle of this theory is the life powering energy that is known as Qi (pronounced 'chee').  Every aspect of bodily function depends upon Qi and its flow through the tissues.  When Qi flow is disturbed anywhere in the body, Qi imbalance that results can cause pain, stiffness, sickness and even emotional pain and lethargy.

Are there any contra-indications?
For anyone suffering from osteoporosis Tuina would not be suitable, a more gentle massage would be offered instead.
